I write in response to Mr Bulmer’s letter regarding the condition of Horbury in the Express. I understand his concern; the welfare of the town and its people is our main focus as councillors. However let’s be clear Horbury isn’t run down, it has a thriving community and a wide variety of voluntary groups and societies.

In The Citizen, issue 53 Spring 2013, we read that Wakefield Council is continuing with the regeneration of Castleford, Wakefield’s Westgate and Kirkgate, Pontefract, Normanton, Knottingley and Ferrybridge, with no mention of the “cuts”.

It occurred to me today, while reading yet another apologist missive from Coun Peter Box, that if he spent half as much time carrying out the business of the council as he does on defending it from every minor criticism from readers of your paper, Wakefield Council might well be more highly regarded and therefore less likely to attract said criticism.

The proposed HS2 High Speed Train to Leeds-London will cut through and decimate large areas of valuable urban green belt land in the Wakefield area, including the worlds first nature reserve at Walton, the renowned Newland Hall Estate at Normanton, the Historic Henge at Altofts and the Calder Wetlands at Stanley/Bottomboat.

I am writing a book dealing with the very curious story of the Simpsons of Walton Hall - a story which can be likened to a parallel to the Downton Abbey story on television recently, except that mine is a true story based on original documents, photographs and maps, and mine covers far more aspects of the family’s life - business, food, sport (including golf, the Badsworth hunt, croquet and, especially, cricket), home furnishings, carriages, servants etc.
